Kayak Group Outing

WE WILL PLAN TO GO TO MATLACHA COMMUNITY PARK. The last time we were there was September, 2015. It’s close by, has a developed launch site, plenty of parking, and facilities. Disclaimer: the last time we went we were actually lost for a while, but everyone made it back just fine, so don’t worry.]

We will meet at The Publix parking lot at the NE corner of Burnt Store Road (Veterans Parkway) and Pine Island Road at 9:30 and carpool to the launch spot. Or you can meet us at the launch site at 9:45. The address of the park is 4577 Pine Island Road in Matlacha. Directions: travel west on Pine Island Road over the draw bridge, and then over a second small bridge. Turn left into the park at the sign. Once in the park, the kayak launch site is on the left past the community building, but the road is one way, so you have to turn right and drive clear around the park past the boat launch ramp to the kayak launch on the EAST side of the island, on your right. You can drive right up to the launch. There is no launch fee, but you will have to pay to park your car. [If you are at a hard surface boat ramp, you are in the wrong place.]

We will paddle around the SE of the island, then west about 1/3 mile into the mangroves. There are several “trails” into the mangroves, and we’ve had fun wandering our way into them. We’ll stop and raft up for lunch. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, your camera, dry bag, bug stuff, and food.

Kayak rental possibilities:

Carmen’s Kayaks, 4573 Pine Island Road, Matlacha, near the park entrance. Phone 239-333-7332

Gulf Coast Kayak, 4120 Pine Island Road NW, Matlacha, on the road to Matlacha on the right before the draw bridge. Phone 239-283-1125.

Dee Wilzoch is unavailable to take calls, so we are on our own this time. (She will hopefully be back soon. She did offer to loan you her single or double kayak if you can go pick it up. I suggest you call me at my home phone to let me know if you are coming, ph. 239-549-1942, or if you have questions. You can leave a message, but PLEASE speak clearly and give me your phone number. For one thing, we’d like to be looking for you, and if we have to cancel for some reason, I will call. You can also call me call phone, 239-233-6716, but best not leave a message there…I rarely get the message.
